Description

NigComSat-2 is a planned high-throughput communication satellite intended to serve as a successor or backup to the Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT) fleet. It follows NigComSat-1, which failed in orbit, and the current NigComSat-1R, which was built and launched by Chinese partners. The project represents Nigeria's effort to maintain sovereign control over national telecommunications, broadcasting, and internet connectivity, while expanding regional influence across Sub-Saharan Africa. The primary buyer and operator is the Nigerian Federal Government through the NIGCOMSAT agency. The procurement process is traditionally handled via bilateral agreements involving Export-Import banks and foreign space agencies rather than open commercial tender. While the previous satellites were delivered under the China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) framework, recent reports suggest the operator is engaging with multiple international partners to secure more favourable financing and technology transfer terms for this specific second-generation platform.
