Precision parts manufacturing, Part 1: materials and machining

Aerospace alloys, material certification and traceability, CNC and five-axis machining, cutting data, tolerances and GD&T, thin walls, deburring and first article inspection, under production approval rules

By Aerospace Garage Desk · Practitioner · 50 minutes · 24 narrated pages

What you will be able to do

  • ✓ Explain how production approval under EASA Part 21 Subpart G and 14 CFR Part 21 Subpart G, the 9100 quality standards and Nadcap shape aerospace machining.
  • ✓ Distinguish the main aerospace alloys and tempers, and calculate a buy-to-fly ratio and net material cost.
  • ✓ Check mill certificates, heat and lot numbers and traceability records, and handle nonconforming or suspect material correctly.
  • ✓ Calculate spindle speed, table feed, material removal rate and cycle time, and relate tooling, fixturing and parameters to surface finish.
  • ✓ Read tolerances and GD&T, control thin-wall distortion and calculate worst-case and statistical tolerance stack-ups.
  • ✓ Apply the lessons of the ATSB QF32 investigation to datums, first article inspection, deburring and the reporting of nonconformances.
