Engine performance and trend monitoring
Reading turbofan parameters, EGT margin and trends, diagnosing shifts, washes, borescopes, oil and vibration health, and ETOPS reliability and removal planning
What you will be able to do
- ✓ Explain what N1, N2, EGT, fuel flow, oil and vibration indications measure on a two-spool turbofan, and which are required by §25.1305.
- ✓ Define EGT margin, explain why it erodes, and correct snapshots to standard conditions to calculate deltas against a baseline.
- ✓ Diagnose trend shifts caused by compressor fouling, bleed leaks, sensor faults and turbine distress using a decision table.
- ✓ Apply compressor washing, borescope inspection and manual inspection limits, and forecast EGT margin to plan a wash and a removal.
- ✓ Monitor oil consumption, spectrometric analysis and chip detectors, and recognise the common-cause risks of dual maintenance.
- ✓ Calculate fleet IFSD rates against the ETOPS thresholds and link trend data to removal planning and the shop visit, using the official findings on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 to show the limits of inspection.
