Turkish Airlines is deepening its strategic footprint in Latin America by broadening its codeshare partnership with Copa Airlines. This expansion allows the Turkish flag carrier to place its code on additional routes connecting through Panama City, facilitating seamless transit for passengers traveling from Istanbul to various secondary markets across South America. By leveraging Panama’s Tocumen International Airport as a regional gateway, Turkish Airlines can effectively increase its market share in the Southern Hemisphere without the immediate need for capital-intensive direct flight increases to smaller regional cities.

The move strengthens the Star Alliance network's dominance in the transcontinental corridor between Eurasia and Latin America. For the Turkish carrier, the expanded cooperation mitigates operational risks while testing demand for future long-haul capacity expansions. It also reinforces Istanbul Airport's status as a premier global transit point for South American traffic heading toward Central Asia and the Middle East. As both carriers align their schedules, the increased belly-hold cargo potential and passenger feed are expected to improve load factors on the existing Istanbul-Panama City trunk route.

What to watch: Increased flight frequencies on the Istanbul to Panama City route.
