Emirates Maintains Mumbai Operations Amid Secondary Airport Delays

The Dubai-based carrier will continue all flight operations at Mumbai International Airport for the winter season as the neighboring secondary hub remains under construction.

Emirates has confirmed it will retain its full schedule at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for the upcoming winter season. The decision stems from the ongoing construction status of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is intended to alleviate congestion in the metropolitan region but is not yet ready to support international wide-body operations. By staying at the primary hub, the airline ensures stability for its high-frequency Dubai-Mumbai corridor, which remains one of the most profitable and capacity-constrained routes in its South Asian network.

The delay in shifting or splitting operations highlights the logistical challenges facing major carriers as India expands its airport infrastructure. While the new facility promises state-of-the-art MRO and cargo capabilities, international legacy carriers prefer the established connectivity and premium infrastructure of the current airport until the secondary site reaches full operational certification. This operational continuity allows Emirates to maintain its current slot efficiency and passenger transit flows without the disruptions associated with transitioning to an unproven secondary gateway.
