Emirates Evaluates Order Swap Between Boeing 777X and 787 Dreamliner

Emirates is considering a significant revision to its long-haul fleet order book by potentially converting existing Boeing 787 Dreamliner commitments into additional 777X airframes.

Emirates is reviewing its widebody procurement strategy to better align with its high-capacity hub-and-spoke requirements at Dubai International. The carrier is exploring a transition that would see it pivot away from the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in favour of the larger 777X. This shift reflects a preference for the superior seat-count and cargo capabilities of the 777X, which serves as the backbone of the airline’s long-haul operations.

While the 787 was originally intended to provide flexibility on thinner routes, the ongoing delays in the 777X certification programme have forced a re-evaluation of the fleet mix. By consolidating orders around the 777X, Emirates aims to streamline its maintenance operations and training protocols. However, any final decision will depend on Boeing’s ability to provide firm delivery timelines, as the airline seeks to replace its aging fleet of current-generation 777s and A380s over the next decade.

What to watch: Formal amendment of the Boeing order backlog in upcoming quarterly filings.
