The expanded partnership marks the first major growth in codeshare cooperation between the two carriers since 2010. By integrating 11 Indian cities and 40 international destinations into their shared network, the airlines are positioning themselves to capture a larger share of the transit traffic moving through the Singapore Changi Airport hub. This move allows Air India to offer its passengers seamless access to points across Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, while Singapore Airlines gains deeper penetration into the Indian domestic market.
This coordination is a critical component of Air India’s broader transformation strategy under Tata Group ownership. As the airline awaits the formal merger with Vistara, in which Singapore Airlines holds a significant stake, this commercial alignment simplifies regional logistics and enhances fleet utilization. The deal effectively strengthens the Star Alliance presence in the region, creating a more formidable competitive block against Gulf carriers that currently dominate long-haul transit routes connecting India to the rest of the world.
What to watch: Implementation of reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and coordinated scheduling on high-density regional routes.
