Air India Breaks Ground on Major Maintenance Hangar at Delhi International Airport

Air India has commenced construction of a massive integrated maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility in Delhi to shift complex engineering tasks in-house and reduce reliance on foreign providers.

The airline is investing in a sprawling engineering complex designed to accommodate wide-body and narrow-body aircraft simultaneously. By establishing this dedicated hangar, the carrier aims to secure greater control over its maintenance schedules and turn-around times, which have historically been hindered by the need to fly aircraft to third-party overseas facilities. This shift is a critical component of the airline’s multi-year transformation plan to modernize its operational infrastructure and support a rapidly expanding fleet of hundreds of new jets.

Beyond immediate cost savings, the project strengthens the regional aerospace supply chain by fostering local technical expertise and high-value engineering jobs. The facility is expected to handle everything from routine checks to complex structural repairs, positioning the carrier to manage its diverse fleet of Boeing and Airbus models independently. As the airline integrates its various subsidiaries, this centralized maintenance hub will act as the primary technical base, reducing logistical bottlenecks and ensuring higher aircraft availability for the winter and summer flight schedules.
