• Firefly Hyperspectral

  Firefly is a miniaturised hyperspectral imaging payload developed by the Indian space-technology firm Pixxel (). It represents the first generation of the company’s proprietary sensors, designed to fit within the constrained dimensions of a 15-kilogram CubeSat. The system is engineered to capture data across hundreds of narrow spectral bands, providing significantly higher chemical and mineral granularity than traditional multispectral sensors. Its lineage stems from the manufacturer's goal to establish a constellation capable of global daily coverage. This payload is primarily intended for institutional and commercial clients in agriculture, mining, and environmental monitoring who require high-resolution spectral fingerprints. Firefly was successfully integrated into the TD-2 (Shakuntala) mission and launched via a SpaceX rideshare, followed by the Anand satellite on an ISRO PSLV flight. These missions serve as technology demonstrators to prove the feasibility of high-frequency hyperspectral monitoring from a small satellite form factor, with data typically provided via a subscription or imagery-as-a-service model. The Garage desk notes that while the initial demonstrators are in orbit, the primary risk involves the signal-to-noise ratio inherent in miniaturised optical systems.
